Samsung Electronics have thrown down the gauntlet to Apple, saying that iPhone 4′s display technology is no match for Samsung’s AMOLED.

Apple claims that iPhone 4′s ‘Retina Display’ as developed by LG and Hitachi, exhibits a higher resolution than the human eye. The display uses a liquid crystal display that has been developed to be visible from a wider range of angles. Liquid crystal displays have to be lit from the back and protected with a think layer of plastic or glass.

Samsung meanwhile, uses a technology called active matrix organic light emitting diode, AMOLED for short. The LEDs are integrated into the touchscreen and as the LEDs are the lights themselves, no backlight is necessary. this has power-saving implications.

The one drawback is resolution however. LED’s can’t be made smaller enough to get to the 960 x 640 pixel dimensions Apple wanted in the new iPhone’s screen and Apple claims that the lower screen resolution of AMOLED can be detected by the human eye.

Samsung beg to differ however, with a spokesperson refuting Apple’s claims.“The visibility difference is only 3 to 5 percent,” he said. Samsung’s AMOLED displays have a resolution of 800 x 600, or 480,000 total pixels. That’s 80% of the total resolution of the iPhone, assuming a screen of the same size.

Together with the evidence earlier this week that Apple’s application processors are in fact the same Samsung processors used in the Samsung Wave, this is ammunition for the Korean giant’s claim to technological prowess.

If you were looking to buy Nokia N8 or an iPhone 4, then you might want to take another look at the Samsung range!

We can’t vouch 100% for the authenticity of this report, but doubts aside this looks like a first glimpse of the upcoming Samsung i8920 Omnia HD2.

Leaked over at the Mobile-Review forums, the rumoured specs of this new Samsung touchscreen phone are a massive 4-inch Super AMOLED display, 12-million pixel camera with Autofocus and both Xenon and LED flash, 720p HD video recording @ 30fps, and WiFi connectivity.

Word is that it will also be available in 16GB & 32GB variants which looks to give the range of Nokia X6 deals a run for their money. Then again, the Omnia HD2 appears to be lined up to run the new Symbian^3 OS which puts it in direct competition with the platform’s pioneer, the Nokia N8.

The unit featured in the snap clearly looks like a dummy phone, but as far as the legitimacy of the Omnia HD2 specs sheet is concerned, there’s not telling. The absence of a release date certainly doesn’t help though.

In the meantime, what can Samsung fans be excited about – hold tight for our Samsung Wave vs. Samsung Galaxy S report, due early next week.

Samsung announced their flagship Samsung Galaxy S at CTAI a few months ago, but it seems like no one has been able to get their hands on the device sicne then. Fortunately for us, Samsung has a small booth at this year’s Google I/O conference in San Francisco, so we got the chance to play around with the device a little.

As you may already know, the Galaxy S runs on Android 2.1, features a 1GHz processor and is equipped with Samsung’s new Super ALOMED display (measuring in a 4 inches). To be honest, the handset looks and feels very similar to the iPhone 3G S. To Android fans, that may be a step in the wrong direction, but for everyone else out there who is drooling over the iPhone, it gives them a clear (and somewhat better) alternative. The TouchWiz 3.0 UI is a much better experience than what we have seen on the Behold 2, giving users many tools to customize the look and feel on the home screen. We still have no indication on when the Samsung Galaxy S will be available, but their reps did mention that they are planning a global release of the fun which should kick off this summer.

Samsung have a reputation for releasing mobile phones that fit in plenty of features with a simple design and the forthcoming Samsung Champion is no exception.

The Champion is an ultra- compact device with a 2.4 inch touchscreen and a 3×3 widget menu format that allows simple access to features such as the clock, calendar, shortcuts and close contacts.

Other features include an MP3 player, FM radio, 3D sound effects and a dual speaker for summer frolics in the park (or back of the bus). Battery life is super-long too and the Champion’s memory can be extended to 8GB via a micro SD card slot.

Ok, so it’s not going to handle multiple tasks like the HTC Legend deals with, but the Champion is aimed at the complete other end of the market – this is a handset for someone who just wants a compact handset with decent features that isn’t going to break the bank.

The Champion is set to come in four delicious colour ways – “deep” black, “espresso” brown, “sweet” pink or “chic” white.

The device will initially be launched in June in Africa, the Middle East and South America, with Asia and Europe to follow later in the year.

Last month we mentioned that Samsung was working on a budget touchscreen phone called the Samsung S3770. Well, it looks like the phone is one step closer to being released in the market. It recently emerged on the Netherlands website All About Phones, where they had the opportunity to play with the phone.

The first thing you will probably notice about the Samsung S3770 is the size of it. As a touchscreen, the phone is rather quite small. However, the actual TFT touchscreen is a decent size, measuring at 2.6 inches. It also includes a 1.3 megapixel camera and bluetooth. Unfortunately, we still do not have the official specs or the price of the Samsung S3770. However, the price is expected to be below 100 euros.

This year, a few select Samsung mobile phones will come shipped with the FlipFont mobile font download application. Created by Monotype Imaging, this “application provides the ability to preview, select, license and download type from an online selection of mobile-optimized fonts from Monotype Imaging’s renowned Monotype®, Linotype® and ITC® typeface collections.” Basically, this application allows users to customize their phones by downloading new fonts to display on their menus and other applications.

Currently, the Samsung Galaxy S features the FlipFont as a built-in application. It is the first mobile phone ever to do so. In addition to that, it also has the distinguished honor of being the first FlipFont-supported phone to be based on the Google Android Marketplace.

So what does Samsung hope to accomplish with the new partnership with Monotype Imaging? Well, according to Hankil Yoon, vice president of Samsung’s Mobile Communications Business, “I believe that our customers will benefit from the ability to tap into a wide range of distinctive fonts right from their mobile phone. FlipFont offers unique value that enhances the mobile user experience.”

At the time of this writing, the only Samsung phone that we know to have this feature is the Samsung Galaxy S. Hopefully, Samsung will release a list of phones that will be shipped with this new application.

We’re told that the iPhone deals with all that you can throw at it – multiple applications, Google-maps street view, intense graphically splendid gaming.

And with some nice Vodafone iPhone deals about, the Jesus phone isn’t even that expensive anymore.

But how does iPhone handle the real pressures of modern life? Can it withstand being dropped, either accidentally, or otherwise? How about being sat on?

No, as many an iPhone user has found out, they don’t stand up to even moderate abuse.

Samsungs can withstand a hell of a lot more punishment and for that we salute them.

We say, why buy an iPhone when you can have a Samsung!
