Select Samsung Mobile Phones To Be Fitted With Monotype FlipFont

This year, a few select Samsung mobile phones will come shipped with the FlipFont mobile font download application. Created by Monotype Imaging, this “application provides the ability to preview, select, license and download type from an online selection of mobile-optimized fonts from Monotype Imaging’s renowned Monotype^®, Linotype^® and ITC^® typeface collections.” Basically, this application allows users to customize their phones by downloading new fonts to display on their menus and other applications.

Currently, the Samsung Galaxy S features the FlipFont as a built-in application. It is the first mobile phone ever to do so. In addition to that, it also has the distinguished honor of being the first FlipFont-supported phone to be based on the Google Android Marketplace.

So what does Samsung hope to accomplish with the new partnership with Monotype Imaging? Well, according to Hankil Yoon, vice president of Samsung’s Mobile Communications Business, “I believe that our customers will benefit from the ability to tap into a wide range of distinctive fonts right from their mobile phone. FlipFont offers unique value that enhances the mobile user experience.”

At the time of this writing, the only Samsung phone that we know to have this feature is the Samsung Galaxy S. Hopefully, Samsung will release a list of phones that will be shipped with this new application.
